Overview

  • Since July 1 the Bundeswehr has begun an updated training concept that introduces a drone module to teach recruits how to deploy and defend against combat drones
  • The new service will last at least six months on a voluntary basis with a mandatory questionnaire for men and optional participation for women and a fallback to conscription if volunteer numbers fall short
  • Government departments have started coordinating the draft law aiming for a Cabinet decision by the end of August and enactment in January 2026
  • Investments in infrastructure are underway to support expanded training and to offer supplementary qualifications such as language courses and driving-license instruction
  • General Inspector Carsten Breuer affirmed a target strength of 460,000 personnel including reserves to fulfill NATO capability commitments
