Bundeswehr Begins 'Bollwerk Bärlin III' in Berlin With Nighttime U-Bahn Drills

The drills reflect Germany’s renewed focus on realistic urban defense training following Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Overview

  • The Wachbataillon is running the exercise from November 17 to 21 across Berlin, including activities visible in public spaces.
  • At U-Bahnhof Jungfernheide, troops will train movement in underground facilities, clearing routes, casualty handling, and detaining saboteurs from 1:00 to 4:00 a.m. on November 18–20.
  • Authorities say there is no danger to the public, snipers will appear only for scenario depiction, and live ammunition will not be used.
  • Further training sites include the police “Fighting City” in Ruhleben and the former Rüdersdorf chemical works to rehearse protection of government facilities and critical infrastructure.
  • Residents should expect possible traffic restrictions and military convoys marked with blue flags—green on the last vehicle—and can contact the Bundeswehr at 030 1824-24242 or info@bundeswehr.org.
