Bundestag Lifts Immunity of AfD Lawmakers Stephan Brandner and Matthias Moosdorf

The vote opens criminal inquiries, authorizing enforcement of a pending €30,000 court fine.

Overview

  • Lawmakers from the CDU/CSU, SPD, Greens and Left backed the motion on Thursday evening, while the AfD abstained.
  • Prosecutors in Gera are investigating Brandner for insult and alleged incitement to insult over repeated attacks on SPIEGEL journalist Ann-Katrin Müller.
  • Courts barred Brandner from calling Müller a “Faschistin” and imposed €50,000 in fines, of which €20,000 was paid and €30,000 awaits compulsory collection after immunity was lifted.
  • Müller’s lawyer said the Bundestag decision paves the way to collect the record €30,000 penalty as separate criminal inquiries continue.
  • Moosdorf is reported to have given a Hitler salute in a Reichstag side room about two and a half years ago, an allegation prosecutors can now pursue.
