Overview
- On June 5, lawmakers voted to continue the annual adjustment, boosting monthly pay from €11,227.20 to €11,833 effective July 1.
- The system, introduced in 2014 and applied since 2016, ties MPs’ salaries to the Federal Statistical Office’s nominal wage index.
- The Union, SPD and Greens backed the extension for its data-driven approach, while the Left Party and AfD opposed the automatic raises.
- Members also receive a tax-free monthly expense allowance of €5,349.58 and can claim up to €12,000 a year for office costs in Berlin.
- The Bundestag must reaffirm the wage-index mechanism at the start of each legislative period or salaries default to the last approved level.
