Built-In Phone Alerts Send Pacific Tsunami Warnings After Kamchatka Quake

Emergency alert settings on phones can be verified to ensure tsunami alerts override silent modes, with seismic warnings arriving automatically.

Overview

  • A magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30 triggered tsunami alerts across Japan, China, Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast
  • Mobile users are urged to activate emergency notifications on iOS via Settings > Notifications > Pre-Alertas de Protección Civil and on Android through Settings > Notifications > Wireless Emergency Alerts
  • The ES-Alert system leverages Cell Broadcast over 4G/5G networks to reach more than 90% of the population and delivers tsunami and earthquake alerts even in silent or Do Not Disturb modes
  • Civil Protection alerts operate at three levels: Level 1 defaults on iOS 15.6+ and Android 11+, Level 2 requires manual user activation and Level 3 appears in select countries for specific emergencies
  • Google Play Services on Android can send earthquake warnings seconds before shaking and automatically share caller location and contextual data with emergency responders
