Buffalo Charter School Stages Surprise Wedding for Its Principal

Staff fulfilled her wish to involve students by turning a school day into a child-led ceremony.

Overview

  • On Oct. 3, the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School transformed its courtyard for a surprise ceremony with hundreds of pre-K through fourth-grade students present.
  • Assistant Principal Courtney Champlin organized the event, guiding Brianna Lanoye under the guise of a school function and presenting a veil and bouquet on arrival.
  • Champlin had attire ready for the moment, including a wedding dress for Lanoye and a T-shirt tuxedo for the groom, Zach.
  • Student representatives escorted Lanoye, a student officiated, classmates delivered heartfelt remarks, and the couple exchanged candy rings before a schoolwide celebration.
  • Lanoye called the experience one of the most touching moments of her life, and the couple held their formal wedding on Oct. 12 on the same campus.
