Buenos Aires to Close Line B’s Malabia Station for Two Months Starting Dec. 9

The shutdown is part of a city-funded program to upgrade stations under the 2026 budget.

Overview

  • Subterráneos de Buenos Aires says Malabia will be closed for about two months as crews waterproof, repaint, renew floors, add LED lighting, update signage with braille, and install new platform furniture, with a mural and the historic “Canning” sign to be restored.
  • Other stations currently closed for similar works include Congreso, Río de Janeiro and Loria on Line A, Uruguay on Line B, and Plaza Italia and Agüero on Line D.
  • Station refurbishments typically take around three months, and the operator has been sequencing works to keep service running while upgrades proceed.
  • The broader Line B modernization includes 174 new CRRC-built cars slated to start entering service in early 2027, bringing air-conditioning, onboard information systems and security cameras.
  • Infrastructure works will raise Line B’s catenary to 1,500 volts and phase out the third rail, a shift aimed at enabling the new fleet on the network’s busiest line with about 180,000 daily riders.
