Buenos Aires Sets January 2027 Deadline for Clean-Energy Bus Fleet

Diesel coaches will retire after ten years, with the city targeting 15 percent electric or hybrid vehicles by 2026, scaling up to 30 percent by 2027.

Overview

  • The resolution, signed by Transport Secretary Guillermo Krantzer in mid-July, formalizes a shift under Law 2930’s Urban Environmental Plan and builds on a 2017 pilot that demonstrated electric buses’ CO₂-cutting potential.
  • The eBus pilot has carried over 100,000 passengers with an 80 percent satisfaction rate and production of a fully electric Trambús fleet for Pompeya, Belgrano and Jorge Newbery Airport is on track for mid-2026 service.
  • Since inheriting control of 30 lines, the city has added 145 zero-kilometer buses and scheduled replacement of 141 vehicles that exceed the new ten-year age cap, lowering the fleet’s average age.
  • Revised subsidy incentives will reward operators who acquire GNC or electric buses, accelerating the transition and helping companies offset initial procurement costs.
  • Tenders for charging infrastructure, SUBE-compatible multipayment systems and AI-driven driver-assistance cameras and sensors are set to launch in the coming months.
