Buenos Aires Province to Push 2026 Bill for Indefinite Mayor Re-election

The move seeks to lift a 2016 term-limit law that would sideline 82 mayors in 2027.

Overview

  • Government minister Carlos Bianco said the administration will reintroduce in 2026 a bill to allow indefinite re-election for intendentes, calling the current ban proscriptive.
  • The target is Law 14.836, enacted under María Eugenia Vidal in 2016, which limits mayors, provincial legislators and councilors to two consecutive terms.
  • Without a change, 82 of 135 municipal leaders cannot seek another term in 2027, a tally that spans Peronists, the UCR and some PRO/Libertarian officials.
  • Peronist intendentes, particularly those in Axel Kicillof’s Movimiento Derecho al Futuro, plan to lobby the Legislature, arguing the change would consolidate local backing for the governor in future races.
  • Passage remains uncertain given internal Peronist resistance and opposition blocs, after earlier reforms cleared the Senate but stalled in the Chamber of Deputies, including proposals by Luis Vivona and Ayelén Durán.
