Buenos Aires Opens First BiblioSubte Library in Plaza de Mayo Station

The city is using the subway to extend its public library network through a six-site rollout by 2027.

Overview

  • The Plaza de Mayo lending point on Line A operates Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 20:00 for members of the City’s Public Library Network.
  • Registered users can borrow up to three books per month from the centralized catalog and return them via an on-site dropbox.
  • Reported collection size at the inaugural site ranges from about 150 to 200 titles, with some books donated by publishers, according to LA NACION.
  • LA NACION also reports the site is currently staffed by library-studies students and interns rather than hired professional librarians.
  • City culture and transit officials, including Minister Gabriela Ricardes and SBASE president Javier Ibáñez, attended the opening as the pilot builds on prior Subte reading initiatives.
