Buenos Aires Launches Access-Control Patrols to Tighten Security at City Limits

The new 24/7 unit targets the General Paz perimeter with data-led checks to stop crime before it reaches the city interior.

Overview

  • Patrols cover the 24 kilometers of Avenida General Paz and the Riachuelo bridges, corridors used by about 3.5 million people each day.
  • Each unit fields one patrol car, two motorcycles and eight officers, with two vehicle-transport trucks, support cruisers, transit agents and K9 teams.
  • Deployment begins with randomized, rotating checkpoints in a progressive rollout coordinated through the Anillo Digital, the Urban Monitoring Center and the city camera network using crime and traffic data.
  • Duties include identifying vehicles and people, detecting weapons or drugs, locating wanted individuals and enforcing traffic violations to prevent offenses.
  • Jorge Macri presented the measure with security officials as part of the city’s Plan de Seguridad Integral, citing renovations at more than 50 access detachments and data showing roughly 40% of crimes involve non-residents.
