Buenos Aires Half Marathon Draws Record 31,500 Runners

City officials say the mass race will showcase Buenos Aires' sporting capacity as a dress rehearsal ahead of the September marathon.

Overview

  • Organizers report a record field of more than 31,500 participants this weekend and have confirmed international elite delegations among the starters.
  • The race will use wave starts and corrals to ease congestion at the beginning and match runners by projected pace.
  • The course passes landmark sites such as the Facultad de Derecho, the Obelisco and the Planetario and the city has published detailed traffic closures for major avenues.
  • The municipal running program Buenos Aires Corre has enrolled more than 350 participants to represent the city in the event.
  • Local athletes including Juan Carlos Luqui say they are using the half-marathon to test form after training blocks of roughly 120 to 140 kilometres per week and to prepare for the Marathon Internacional de Buenos Aires on 20 September.
