Buenos Aires Begins Revoking Licenses for Crimes Committed With Cars or Motorcycles

City officials say revocations will be triggered automatically through interagency data sharing.

Overview

  • The policy is in force and applies whenever a person is detained for using a vehicle to commit a crime, including detainees who do not reside in the city.
  • The Secretaría de Seguridad will notify the licensing authority, which will review each case and apply existing rules that can culminate in suspension or cancellation of the license.
  • The city will retroactively cancel 125 licenses issued by Buenos Aires to people detained this year for thefts involving cars or motorcycles.
  • Officials reported 1,021 detainees in 2025 for vehicle-enabled crimes, including 523 with addresses in the Province of Buenos Aires and 446 city residents, of whom 125 held city-issued licenses.
  • The government framed the move as part of its security plan and urged the Province of Buenos Aires and nearby municipalities to coordinate similar measures.
