Buddhist Monks’ ‘Walk for Peace’ Leaves Georgia, Enters South Carolina Today

The group is set to enter South Carolina at Lincolnton today on a revised route toward Columbia.

Overview

  • The monks resumed their final Georgia leg this morning from Tignall to Lincolnton, with a lunch stop at Bethany Independent Methodist Church before planning to cross the Savannah River Bridge into McCormick, South Carolina.
  • Organizers recently redirected the Carolinas path toward Columbia, adjusting earlier plans for a more northern route.
  • The pilgrimage began Oct. 26 in Fort Worth and spans roughly 120 days and about 2,300 miles, with a planned finish in Washington, D.C., in late February.
  • Roughly two dozen monks are walking with support vehicles, accompanied by Aloka, a rescue dog that has traveled with the group.
  • The abbot, Venerable Maha Dam Phommasan, sustained severe injuries in a November Texas crash and remains at his Snellville temple to recover.
