Buddhist Monks’ 2,300-Mile Peace Walk Draws Largest Crowd Yet in Metro Atlanta

  • The group entered Georgia on Dec. 26 at West Point and has moved through communities including Hogansville, Sharpsburg and Fayetteville, with escorts from agencies such as the Troup County Sheriff’s Office and Hogansville Police.
  • Led by Bhikkhu Pannakara, the 19 monks are walking to the U.S. Capitol by Feb. 13, 2026, observing ascetic practices such as one meal a day and outdoor sleeping, accompanied by their dog, Aloka.
