Here’s when to see the “buck” moon peak over Kansas, as well as the beginning of the popular Perseid meteor shower, seen in this file photo.

Overview

  • The full Buck Moon will reach peak illumination at 3:37 p.m. CDT on Thursday, July 10, but is best viewed rising over the eastern horizon later that evening.
  • At Earth’s aphelion, July’s full Moon appears at its farthest point from the Sun and sits unusually low in the sky, often glowing a warm amber hue.
  • The Moon will traverse the Teapot asterism within the Sagittarius constellation, offering a scenic backdrop for stargazers.
  • Mars, Saturn and Venus will appear near the Buck Moon between July 10 and 11, creating a rare planetary alignment.
  • The Perseid meteor shower runs from July 14 to September 1 with peak activity around August 12–13 under a waning gibbous Moon that may dim fainter meteors.
