Bualoi Hits Central Vietnam, At Least 9 Dead Before Storm Weakens Inland

Forecasters had warned of an unusually fast, multi‑hazard storm as it approached the central coast.

Overview

  • The system made landfall around 12:30 a.m. Monday in Ha Tinh with winds up to 133 km/h before weakening to a tropical storm moving toward Laos.
  • State media reported at least nine deaths across several provinces, including Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Hue and Da Nang, with rescue teams searching for 17 missing fishermen.
  • Authorities suspended operations at four coastal airports and kept fishing fleets in port during the storm.
  • Vietnam had moved roughly 250,000 people to safety and mobilized about 117,000 soldiers to support evacuations and relief.
  • Officials said Bualoi had already killed at least 20 people in the Philippines and flooded communities there before crossing the South China Sea.
