Overview
- Telford & Wrekin Council has validated several Street Hub applications, including sites at Naylors Row in Wellington, outside Coffee 1 on Northfield Street and near the Tesco Express at the Hadley Centre, with decisions still pending.
- In Norwich, a proposed hub on Queens Road outside the Travelodge by the bus station is awaiting a decision from Norwich City Council.
- BT has applied for three hubs in Torquay—at Tor Hill House outside Subway and two on Union Street outside McDonald’s and Primark—even as some councils elsewhere have rejected similar schemes over street clutter concerns.
- The proposed units provide ultra-fast public Wi‑Fi, free phone calls, device charging and touchscreen access to council services, funded by double‑sided advertising screens.
- Applicants state local authorities would receive 5% of each screen’s time for public messages, and BT says more than 900 Street Hubs are already installed across UK cities.
