BT Group Launches Pilot to Convert Street Cabinets into EV Charging Points
The initiative aims to address the UK's inadequate EV charging infrastructure by repurposing up to 60,000 cabinets.
- BT Group has initiated a pilot program to convert up to 60,000 of its old street cabinets, traditionally used for broadband and phone cables, into electric vehicle (EV) charging points.
- The first conversion under the pilot scheme will take place in East Lothian, Scotland, with more locations to follow throughout the year.
- The cabinets, which are already connected to a power source, will be retrofitted with a device that enables renewable energy to be shared to a charge point alongside the existing broadband service.
- As the nationwide rollout of full fibre broadband progresses, the cabinets will no longer be needed for broadband, allowing for the addition of more EV charge points.
- The initiative aims to address the UK's lack of EV charging infrastructure, a problem that 60% of people believe is inadequate and 78% of petrol and diesel drivers say is a barrier to purchasing an EV.
