BSNL’s Indigenous 4G Network to Be Upgraded to 5G in 6–8 Months

The upgrade relies on a homegrown stack from C-DOT, Tejas Networks, TCS.

Overview

  • Union telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said BSNL will switch its new 4G sites to 5G within six to eight months, delivering end-to-end 5G capability nationwide.
  • He said 92,564 indigenously built BSNL towers were inaugurated last week by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, spanning Kashmir to Kanyakumari and Bharuch to Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The fully indigenous 4G stack—core by C-DOT, RAN by Tejas Networks, integration by TCS—was developed in 22 months and is positioned for software-driven upgrades.
  • Scindia cited operational gains at BSNL, including operating profit of Rs 5,396 crore, two profitable quarters, and a subscriber base rising to 9.1 crore.
  • He said India’s 5G rollout is the fastest globally, covering 99.8% of districts, and framed the BSNL upgrade as part of an Atmanirbhar technology push.
