BSE to Join Nifty 50 as Wipro Is Removed

NSE Indices said the swap reflects index rules on six‑month average free‑float market capitalisation and will force passive funds to rebalance their portfolios.

Overview

  • NSE Indices confirmed on Monday that BSE Ltd. will replace Wipro Ltd. in the Nifty 50, with the change taking effect from September 30, 2026 after the close of trading on September 29.
  • The committee cited six‑month average free‑float market caps, reporting BSE at Rs 1,40,879 crore and Wipro at Rs 55,930 crore, and said BSE met the 1.5× threshold required for promotion.
  • Wipro will move into the Nifty Next 50 and the rebalancing is part of a wider reshuffle across the Nifty 100, Nifty 500, midcap and smallcap indices that named multiple entrants and exits.
  • Brokers and analysts expect mechanical flows from index funds and ETFs to push money into BSE and out of Wipro, with one estimate showing roughly $741 million of inflows to BSE and $246 million of outflows from Wipro.
  • The committee applied existing rules such as futures-and-options eligibility and the 1.5× free‑float test, which is why other candidates like TVS Motor and Divi’s Laboratories were not selected, and the review followed SEBI’s earlier guidance that opens the door for REITs to enter equity indices.
