BSE, NSE Shut for Maharashtra Civic Polls, MCX Evening Trade From 5 PM

A state-declared holiday for Mumbai’s municipal elections prompted the shutdown, with trading to resume Friday.

Overview

  • Equity, equity derivatives, debt, currency and electronic gold receipt segments are closed for the day on both exchanges.
  • Equity derivatives contracts slated to expire on January 15 were brought forward to January 14 under revised exchange circulars.
  • NSE and BSE initially marked January 15 as a settlement holiday before upgrading it to a full trading holiday after the public holiday order.
  • MCX remains closed in the morning session and reopens from 5:00 pm to 11:55 pm, with selected agri commodities trading only until 9:00 pm.
  • The ad-hoc holiday lifts the 2026 trading-holiday count to 16, and the decision drew criticism from Zerodha CEO Nithin Kamath, who called it poor planning.
