Brush Fire in San Diego’s Clairemont Mesa West Forces Widespread Evacuations

San Diego’s fire department with mutual aid partners is containing a five-acre blaze east of Tecolote Canyon as hundreds of residents remain under evacuation orders

Overview

  • The blaze was first reported at about 5:05 p.m. near 5221 Mount Ariane Terrace and had expanded to roughly five acres within ten minutes.
  • Evacuation orders cover homes on Cowley Way between Field Street and Ute Drive and neighborhoods east of Clairemont Drive between Hartford Street and Balboa Avenue.
  • San Diego Fire-Rescue Department has mobilized more than 50 personnel, including engines, helicopters, an air tanker, hand crews and brush rigs, with support from Chula Vista and Poway fire departments.
  • Fire behavior was initially rapid, doubling in size within minutes before slowing to a controlled rate of spread.
  • A temporary evacuation center has been set up at the Target store at 5680 Balboa Avenue to shelter displaced residents.
