Brugada Opens Utopía Centli in Topilejo to Protect Native Maize and Centralize Free Services

Centralizing free health, sport, cultural and care services for more than 29,000 residents, the complex also houses seed‑bank facilities to protect native maize.

Overview

  • The Utopía Centli was inaugurated on Sunday, July 26, 2026, after a 253 million pesos investment and rehabilitation of an abandoned sports site to create roughly 50,000 square meters of public space.
  • The complex groups free services in one site, including medical clinics, a semi‑Olympic pool, sports courts, childcare, elder care, a community dining room, laundry and cultural and educational facilities.
  • The project includes a Casa de Semillas, a seed laboratory and a germplasm bank to monitor and preserve native maize varieties under the city’s declaration as a territory free of transgenic maize.
  • Officials ordered an immediate increase in Red de Transporte de Pasajeros units to Topilejo and pledged to return within two months with a permanent mobility plan to address chronic transport shortages.
  • Local leaders said the Utopía follows nine months of dialogue and a unanimous land donation by the communal assembly, and city officials framed the project as part of broader land‑recovery and conservation efforts that recovered 298 hectares of previously invaded land.
