Bruce DuMont, Chicago Broadcaster and Museum Founder, Dies at 81

His work spanned a nationally syndicated political forum to a Chicago institution safeguarding broadcast history.

  • DuMont died Sept. 10 in Chicago of complications from cancer, his family said.
  • He launched Inside Politics at WBEZ in 1980, later rebranded as Beyond the Beltway, which ended production in January 2025 after 44 years.
  • He founded the Museum of Broadcast Communications in 1987 and led it through multiple relocations, with a pop-up West Loop site expected this fall as it pursues a permanent home.
  • His career included producing WBBM-TV’s Noon Break, helping launch WTTW’s Chicago Tonight, and on-air roles at WGN, WBEZ and other stations.
  • Survivors include his husband, Kevin Fuller, his daughter, Jennifer, and four grandchildren, with a memorial to be announced and suggested donations to the museum or Columbia College.
