Brown University Doctor Deported Despite Federal Court Order

U.S. Customs and Border Protection deported Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a kidney specialist with a valid visa, in alleged defiance of a judge's directive.

Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a Lebanese citizen and Brown University assistant professor, was deported after being detained at Logan Airport upon returning from Lebanon.
Federal Judge Leo T. Sorokin had ordered that Alawieh not be deported without 48 hours' notice to the court, but she was flown to Paris the same evening.
Customs and Border Protection officials claimed they did not receive timely notice of the court order before carrying out the deportation.
Alawieh's lawyers allege that CBP willfully violated the court order and denied her access to legal counsel during her detention.
A court hearing is scheduled for Monday to address the alleged defiance of the court order and the justification for Alawieh's deportation.
