Brother of Anti-Drug Activist Killed in Marseille Daylight Shooting, Warning Attack Not Ruled Out

Prosecutors have opened an organized-crime inquiry that considers whether the killing was meant to intimidate the activist.

Overview

  • The 20-year-old, identified by the prosecutor as a younger brother of activist Amine Kessaci, was shot multiple times around 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Marseille’s 4th arrondissement near the Dôme concert hall.
  • Investigators say two assailants on a motorcycle pulled alongside the victim’s car and the rear passenger fired, with several 9 mm shell casings recovered at the scene.
  • An inquiry for assassinat en bande organisée and association de malfaiteurs has been opened and assigned to the DCOS, with no arrests reported so far.
  • The victim was “absolutely unknown” to police, had a clean record, and was preparing to take the exam to become a police officer, according to officials.
  • The prosecutor said a warning-style assassination aimed at Kessaci is not excluded, a burned motorcycle believed linked to the attack was found, and the two suspects remain at large while any direct tie to narcotrafficking is still unestablished.
