Brooklyn Subway Beating Victim Identified as Nicola Tanzi as Suspect Is Held Without Bail

Prosecutors cite an anti-church rant as investigators say the assault began after Tanzi held a station gate open.

Overview

  • Police identified the victim as Nicola “Nick” Tanzi, 64, a Brooklyn security guard and devoted volunteer in local Italian Catholic parishes.
  • Investigators say Tanzi held open the Jay St.–MetroTech gate when the assailant allegedly punched and kicked him repeatedly, then rifled his pockets; he died at Brooklyn Methodist about 90 minutes later.
  • The suspect, 25-year-old David Mazariegos, was arrested after officers recognized him near Times Square following a citywide photo alert.
  • At the time of arrest, police recovered four of Tanzi’s credit cards, one reportedly used at a nearby Target, and a katana-style sword; Mazariegos faces charges including criminal possession of a weapon.
  • Prosecutors say Mazariegos ranted about hating churches, and officials report he has 17 prior arrests; he is in custody without bail as the case proceeds.
