Overview
- Six schools in Queens and one in Brooklyn will shut at the end of the 2025–26 year: Sacred Heart (Cambria Heights), St. Bartholomew (Elmhurst), St. Nicholas of Tolentine (Jamaica), Incarnation (Queens Village), St. Thomas the Apostle (Woodhaven), St. Elizabeth (Ozone Park), and Our Lady of Trust (Canarsie).
- K–8 enrollment at each campus fell into the low 100s since 2019, with examples including Sacred Heart dropping from 225 to 134, St. Nicholas of Tolentine from 320 to 144, and St. Thomas the Apostle from 182 to 105.
- The diocese says the schools have been operating with deficits totaling millions of dollars, creating an unsustainable financial situation.
- Families will receive placement assistance to more than 50 other diocesan elementary schools, and faculty and staff will be provided support resources.
- School activities and events will continue through June, and transition guidance—including help transferring Futures in Education scholarships—is available at catholicschoolsbq.org/schooltransitions.
