Bronx Tenant Charged With Murder in Building Super’s Killing After Claremont Shooting

Police say the confrontation grew from an ongoing dispute over access to the shared backyard, with the suspect’s arraignment pending.

Overview

  • Jimmy Avila, 44, was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said, with arraignment pending Thursday.
  • Police said Avila opened fire around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday inside 1412 College Ave. in Claremont, fatally shooting superintendent Ryan Hines, 37.
  • A 62-year-old neighbor identified by his wife as Orlando Nieves was shot in the arm and hospitalized in stable condition, and a 59-year-old man was also wounded and expected to recover.
  • Local outlets reported Avila hid in his first-floor apartment, called News 12 Bronx about surrendering, and was taken into custody after a barricade.
  • The killing was the fifth shooting in less than two days in the Bronx, and Mayor Eric Adams said he was activating a full mobilization plan to curb the violence.
