Overview
- Jimmy Avila, 44, was arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon, the NYPD said, with arraignment pending Thursday.
- Police said Avila opened fire around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday inside 1412 College Ave. in Claremont, fatally shooting superintendent Ryan Hines, 37.
- A 62-year-old neighbor identified by his wife as Orlando Nieves was shot in the arm and hospitalized in stable condition, and a 59-year-old man was also wounded and expected to recover.
- Local outlets reported Avila hid in his first-floor apartment, called News 12 Bronx about surrendering, and was taken into custody after a barricade.
- The killing was the fifth shooting in less than two days in the Bronx, and Mayor Eric Adams said he was activating a full mobilization plan to curb the violence.
