Bronx Stepfather Charged After 12-Year-Old Is Critically Injured in Apartment Stabbing

Arraignment is pending in what police describe as a late-night domestic assault that also injured the girl's mother.

Overview

  • Police identified the suspect as Joshua Burnside, 28, the woman’s husband and the 12-year-old’s stepfather, and said the attack occurred around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday on East 173rd Street in Crotona Park East.
  • The child suffered multiple stab wounds to the head and underwent surgery at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition; her 31-year-old mother was stabbed in the abdomen and slashed in the face and is stable at Jacobi Medical Center.
  • Two younger children, ages 5 and 2, were found unharmed in the apartment and taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to authorities.
  • Burnside was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and endangering the welfare of a child; he was evaluated at a hospital for psychiatric fitness and awaits arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court.
  • Law-enforcement sources reported that a screw or other tool was driven into the girl’s head or nose and that charges could be upgraded to attempted murder, details that have been reported but not formally confirmed in court filings.
