Bronx NYCHA Tower Partially Collapses After Boiler-Room Explosion

Engineers have deemed most apartments safe to reenter except the F and G lines.

Overview

  • An explosion in the building’s incinerator/ventilation shaft tied to the boiler room occurred around 8:10 a.m. at 205–207 Alexander Avenue in Mott Haven.
  • No injuries were reported as FDNY teams, including K-9 units and drones, searched the rubble for possible victims.
  • Con Edison shut off gas service, streets were closed, and a nearby community center opened as a temporary shelter for displaced residents.
  • Roughly 100 families were displaced citywide from the affected lines, with about 40 apartments closest to the damaged shaft to remain vacant.
  • Fire marshals, the Department of Buildings and NYCHA are investigating the cause, noting recent boiler work and non-safety boiler violations without establishing any link to the blast.
