Bronx Man Charged in Fatal Stabbing of 14-Year-Old Boy

Police say the suspect, with a history of violent incidents and mental health issues, also linked to a prior subway attack.

Caleb Rijos, 14, was fatally stabbed twice in the chest on his way to school in the Bronx on Friday morning in what police describe as an unprovoked attack.
The suspect, Waldo Mejia, 29, was arrested Friday night and charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.
NYPD officials believe Mejia is also responsible for a slashing incident earlier this month at a Bronx subway station, where a man was randomly attacked.
Mejia has a documented history of prior arrests, including incidents involving arson, criminal mischief, and weapons possession, as well as mental health interactions with the NYPD.
Authorities have highlighted systemic challenges in addressing repeat offenders with severe mental health issues, calling for more secure facilities and resources.
