Bronx Man Arraigned From Hospital Bed on Attempted Murder in Attack That Drove Sharp Object Into 12-Year-Old’s Brain

Prosecutors described the use of household tools in the assault, with a judge ordering hospital-bed defendant Joshua Burnside held without bail.

Overview

  • Joshua Burnside, 28, appeared by video from a hospital bed and was charged with attempted murder, assault, weapon possession, harassment, and child endangerment, then was remanded without bail by Judge Harold Bahr.
  • The Oct. 22 attack followed a late-night argument in a sixth-floor E. 173rd Street apartment, where police later recovered a knife and found two younger children unharmed.
  • Court documents say Burnside used items including a knife, fork, spoon, plate, tongs, and a crochet needle, then drove a long screw or similar sharp object up the girl’s nose and into her brain.
  • The 12-year-old underwent emergency surgery at Cohen Children’s Medical Center to remove the object and remains in critical but stable condition.
  • The girl’s mother, identified as Karizma Dabney, suffered stab wounds to her head and stomach and underwent stomach surgery, while Burnside was hospitalized after a suicide attempt that delayed arraignment; his next court date is Dec. 10.
