Bronx Apartment Building Collapse Under Investigation

Building owner with history of violations faces scrutiny as dozens are left homeless.

The Bronx District Attorney’s office is investigating the partial collapse of a seven-story apartment building that left dozens of tenants homeless.
The building's owner, David Kleiner, has been on the radar of tenant advocates and city officials, and was penalized earlier this year for housing code violations.
The building had been undergoing facade repairs, and a 2020 inspection found cracked brick and loose, damaged mortar on the building’s facade.
No trapped victims were found in the rubble, but two people sustained minor injuries during the evacuation.
The collapse has prompted the relocation of residents, with the city providing buses as temporary shelter.
