Bromley Cross Protest Targets Oakmere’s 100-Home Green Belt Plan

The proposal remains at consultation stage pending an outline application.

Overview

  • More than 100 residents and local councillors gathered at Tongfields on September 28 to oppose the scheme.
  • Oakmere Homes is consulting on emerging plans for around 100 houses on green belt land at the western edge of Bromley Cross, including a mix of market and affordable homes.
  • The developer says existing trees and hedgerows would be retained, a public right of way would be preserved and enhanced, and a green buffer would separate new homes from the Dunscar conservation area.
  • Councillors say the area cannot absorb more housing and contend the firm is leaning on new policy to classify the site as “grey belt,” a claim raised as part of their objections.
  • Residents cite fears over heavier traffic—estimating roughly 200 additional cars—along with pressure on schools and services and loss of recreation space and wildlife; Oakmere has not yet filed an outline application and indicates a possible 2027 start with a three-to-four-year build if approved.
