Broadway Box Office Slides in Post–Labor Day Week as 'Art' Debuts in Top Five

Labor Day timing drove a one-week dip in an otherwise stronger season.

  • Broadway grossed $25,137,042 from 215,095 tickets across 27 shows for the week ending Sept. 7, down roughly 18% in grosses and 9% in attendance from the prior week.
  • 'Art' grossed $1,253,680 in its first full preview week at about 97% capacity at the Music Box, with opening set for Sept. 16.
  • 'John Proctor Is The Villain' closed on Sept. 7 with a season-best $1,054,847, selling out the Booth Theatre in its final week.
  • The top earners were Hamilton ($2,150,026), Wicked ($2,005,301), Mamma Mia! ($1,503,194), The Lion King ($1,451,644) and Art ($1,253,680).
  • Several titles saw sharp attendance drops, including The Great Gatsby (-25.2%), Six (-23.1%), Hell's Kitchen (-21.6%) and The Outsiders (-19.1%), as Cabaret logged a run-low $380,052 ahead of its Sept. 21 closing.
