Brits Spent Over £5 Billion Fixing Botched DIY Jobs, Survey Finds

NICEIC says the results highlight the hazards of complex jobs, especially electrical work, prompting a call to use qualified professionals.

Overview

  • A NICEIC-commissioned survey of 2,000 UK adults found 93% have attempted DIY tasks, from fitting pendant lights to knocking down walls.
  • Four in ten respondents hired tradespeople to remedy failed efforts, paying an average of £239 and driving an estimated £5,082,996,813 in nationwide repair costs.
  • Forty-three percent reported dangerous mistakes during DIY, including burst pipes, electric shocks and falls from ladders or stools.
  • People who end up calling for help do so about twice a year, often because they get stuck mid-job or lack the right tools.
  • Sixty-nine percent said they should not have attempted certain tasks, and roughly a third are now more cautious about larger projects.
