Britons Tougher on Immigration Than Americans, NatCen Survey Finds

NatCen designed matching UKUS questionnaires to show differing fault lines in polarization.

Overview

  • Forty-two percent of UK respondents support legal efforts to deport people living in the country without permission, compared with 33 percent in the US.
  • Only 49 percent in the UK say diversity strengthens society versus 64 percent in the US, and 49 percent in the UK versus 63 percent in the US view openness to people from around the world as essential to national identity.
  • UK respondents are more liberal on family and sexuality issues than Americans, with higher support for contraception availability (92 percent), same-sex marriage as a societal good (59 percent), and legal abortion in all or most cases (86 percent) versus 78, 34, and 63 percent in the US.
  • Reform UK supporters are more likely than Trump supporters to oppose allowing unauthorized immigrants to stay (79 percent versus 70 percent) while showing greater support for legal abortion (82 percent versus 35 percent).
  • The study surveyed more than 2,000 UK residents in June 2025 and more than 8,000 US adults in April 2024, with both samples weighted to reflect national populations.
