British Woman Dies After Falling Ill at Cape Verde Resort as Family Launches Legal Action

The family has instructed Irwin Mitchell to investigate alleged hygiene failures at the Riu Cabo Verde.

Overview

  • Elena Walsh, 64, became unwell on August 8 with vomiting, diarrhoea and heavy sweats and died on August 10 after treatment at a clinic and then a hospital on Sal.
  • Her husband, Patrick Walsh, alleges lukewarm and undercooked food at the resort and describes chaotic medical care, noting he and other relatives also fell ill.
  • Irwin Mitchell says it represents the family and more than 1,500 UK holidaymakers who reported illness in Cape Verde over the past three years, including over 200 at the Riu Cabo Verde.
  • An inquest into Elena Walsh’s death is expected at a later date, and no official cause has been reported.
  • Reporters sought comment from Riu Cabo Verde, which had not responded at the time of publication.
