British Skier, 24, Dies After 300-Metre Off-Piste Fall at Les Arcs 2000

Authorities urge avoiding very steep off-piste slopes when the snow is hard.

Overview

  • The 24-year-old fell about 300 metres after losing footing while skiing off-piste with a group at the Les Arcs 2000 area in Savoie.
  • Witnesses alerted rescuers, ski patrollers reached the scene, an air ambulance flew from Courchevel, and a doctor and police rescue workers were unable to revive him.
  • A second skier from the party was found stranded at the top of the slope and was airlifted to safety by a police helicopter.
  • Local reporting places the accident zone above an avalanche dam in the Chavonnes area, where a wide slope narrows toward a rocky ridge with minimal hard snow.
  • Les Arcs issued condolences and safety advice, and coverage notes 29 ski-season deaths across France in 2023–24.
