French authorities deployed a helicopter and divers, who discovered the yacht gutted and an empty life raft, with no sign of the sailor.
Search and rescue efforts, involving French, Portuguese, and Spanish vessels and aircraft, were called off early Sunday due to a lack of new information.
The incident occurred during Storm Herminia, which brought winds of up to 98 mph and dangerous conditions to the region, prompting warnings about winter sea travel.
