British Museum Recovers Over 600 Stolen Artefacts

The institution has located 268 additional items, bringing the total recovered to 626 out of approximately 1,500 missing objects.

  • The recovered items include classical Greek and Roman gems and jewellery.
  • Former director Hartwig Fischer resigned following the disclosure of the thefts.
  • Legal proceedings are ongoing against former curator Dr Peter Higgs.
  • Around 500 artefacts were damaged, with some having gold removed.
  • The museum continues to search for the remaining missing objects.
