British Man, 36, Dies in Istanbul After Hair Transplant and Dental Treatment

Police in Istanbul are treating the case as suspected reckless homicide.

Overview

  • Authorities identified the man as Mentor Rama, a British citizen originally from Albania who had traveled to Istanbul for cosmetic procedures.
  • Local reports say he collapsed at his hotel in the Şişli area after dental work the day after a hair transplant and was pronounced dead at Seyrantepe Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital on November 11 at about 4:30 p.m.
  • An autopsy was completed at the Council of Forensic Medicine, but officials have not released a cause of death, and his body has been repatriated to his family.
  • Istanbul police have questioned clinic staff, including the operating surgeon, an anaesthesiologist and nurses, as part of the ongoing investigation.
  • The UK Foreign Office says it is supporting the family, and the case renews scrutiny of Turkey’s dominant hair-transplant industry, which accounts for roughly 60% of the global market and has seen several deaths of British patients in recent years.
