British Basketball Federation Enters Liquidation as Control Shifts Toward SLB and Home Nations

FIBA’s recognition of Super League Basketball accelerated the federation’s collapse, pushing responsibilities toward the home-nation associations.

Overview

  • BBF said it had ceased trading due to a sharp drop in income and unforeseen costs, appointing Begbies Traynor to place the body into liquidation.
  • It is understood many functions will move to Basketball England, and British referees have been cleared to return to FIBA competitions with EuroCup Women assignments on 26 November.
  • FIBA last week granted official recognition to Super League Basketball and lifted the ban on the GB men’s team, who are scheduled to face Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier this month.
  • GBBL, which was awarded a 15-year licence by the BBF, is evaluating legal options to protect its position and recover funds it says were paid under the agreement.
  • SLB expressed sympathy for affected staff and pledged to support GB fixtures, while UK Sport acknowledged uncertainty and said it is working with DCMS and the basketball community on a way forward.
