British Airways Reconfigures A380 Fleet With Upper‑Deck Business Class

The move aims to boost revenue by concentrating seats in premium cabins under tight Heathrow slot limits.

Overview

  • The airline confirmed on Oct. 5, 2026 that each of its 12 A380s will be refitted to 417 seats total, including 12 First suites, 106 business-class Club Suites on the entire upper deck, 84 premium-economy seats and 215 economy seats.
  • Retrofitting each A380 is a nose-to-tail programme that replaces every seat and installs more than 35,000 parts per aircraft, with work taking about 100 days per jet and the first upgraded A380 due to enter service in the coming months.
  • BA is pairing the cabin changes with a multi-year Heathrow lounge overhaul that includes a new Terminal 5C lounge due by the end of 2028 and an arrivals-lounge rebuild starting in early 2027.
  • The strategy is driven by Heathrow slot constraints and a commercial push to capture higher-yield travellers, but it reduces economy capacity on long-haul routes and raises exposure to demand downturns that could force deeper discounts.
  • The programme makes BA an outlier in the industry by doubling down on the four-engine A380 while many rivals retire the type, and it follows a wider modernization plan the carrier began publicising in 2024.
