Britain Sets New Wind Power Record at 22.7 GW

The system operator says the milestone shows the grid can run securely on high shares of renewables, with a zero‑carbon period possible in the months ahead.

Overview

  • Neso confirmed a peak of 22,711 MW at 7:30pm on November 11, surpassing the 22,253 MW high set on December 18, 2024.
  • Wind supplied 55.7% of electricity in the record half hour when embedded wind is included, with 43.6% on the transmission system.
  • The rest of the mix at that time was gas 12.5%, imports 11.3%, nuclear 8%, biomass 8%, hydro 1.4% and storage 1.1%.
  • Wind is now the UK’s largest source of power, and Wasted Wind data show curtailment costs were unusually low during the record interval despite ongoing network constraints.
  • RenewableUK estimates around 32 GW of installed wind capacity and is urging the government to support more projects in upcoming auctions to hit 2030 targets.
