Britain Sets New Wind Power Record as Operator Flags Path to Zero-Carbon Runs

The grid operator says the milestone shows Britain can run securely on far higher shares of clean power.

Overview

  • Neso confirmed an instantaneous record of 22,711 MW at 7:30pm on 11 November, enough electricity for about 22 million homes and exceeding the December 2024 high.
  • Wind supplied 43.6% of grid demand plus 12.1% from embedded turbines, lifting the total wind share to 55.7% at that time.
  • Other sources at the moment of the record were gas at 12.5%, interconnectors 11.3%, nuclear 8%, biomass 8%, hydro 1.4% and storage 1.1%.
  • Wasted Wind tracker data indicates curtailment was minimal during the record half-hour, with £4.73 spent switching off wind and £26.21 on replacement power.
  • Neso says short zero‑carbon periods could be achievable in the months ahead, while industry urges the government to expand auction support to meet 2030 low‑carbon goals.
