Britain, France demand ban of Russian, Belarusian athletes funded by state governments

British and French sports ministers oppose Russian and Belarusian athletes competing as neutrals as recommended by the IOC.
They argue that these athletes could still be funded by their governments, which would violate the sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus after their invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine is threatening to lead a boycott of the Paris 2024 Games unless Moscow withdraws its soldiers.
The IOC is yet to finalize decisions on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes.
The Ukrainian government has also barred its national teams from competing in events which include Russian and Belarusian competitors.
