Overview
- Avon and Somerset Police on Thursday published surveillance images showing four men outside a Bristol building where parts of the collection were housed.
- Investigators say the break-in occurred on 25 September between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m.
- More than 600 items were taken, including jewellery, military medals, badges, carved ivory, silver pieces, bronze figures and geological samples.
- Detective Dan Burgan described a severe loss for the city and appealed for public information, with no arrests or recoveries reported.
- The collection was dispersed after the museum closed in 2012 and is held across five city institutions and the archives, a setup drawing comparisons to wider security concerns highlighted by the British Museum’s 2023 theft case.
